Thailand’s nature, wildlife and geography
On a map, Thailand is reminiscent of a huge elephant’s head with its trunk far down on the Malaysian peninsula, where the ground is covered with rainforest and rubber plantations. The northern region has high mountain ranges and deep jungles with streams and rivers, which culminate in a lush delta area near Bangkok. The lush area around the Chao Praya River is naturally called the Great Rice Bowl. The elephant’s ear to the east has the country’s driest climate and is frequented by tourists. Along the entire Thai coast are several beautiful tropical islands. A large part of the islands and a smaller part of the mainland are national parks. Much of Thailand’s otherwise rich wildlife has been displaced as the population has increased. In the remaining rainforests, however, there are still elephants, tigers, tapirs and bantengas, which are the world’s largest ox. Thailand’s climate is tropical and is characterized by the monsoon with a clear difference between rainy season and dry season. A good rule of thumb is that the further south you go, the longer the rainy season lasts. In the north it rains from June to September, in the south from May to October. The rain rarely lasts all day and during the rainy season, Thai nature thrives in all its green beauty.
