The Blount County School System serves more than 10,000 students in the area. It consists of seven elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school, one alternative school, and one career technical center. The system focuses on student achievement as well as college and career readiness. The district also offers a variety of extracurricular activities for students including sports, clubs, and other activities. Oneida High School is the only public high school in the county. It serves grades nine through twelve with a student population of over 500. Oneida High School offers rigorous academic courses including Advanced Placement classes as well as college preparatory classes. Oneida also offers many extracurricular activities such as athletics, band and chorus, clubs and organizations, art programs and community service opportunities. Another major high school in Blount County is Appalachian High School which is part of the Appalachian Regional Schools System serving grades nine through twelve with a student population of over 600. This system consists of three elementary schools, one middle school and two high schools with a focus on college readiness for all students. Appalachian High School offers a variety of academic courses including Advanced Placement classes as well as college preparatory classes to prepare students for post-secondary education or technical training after graduation from high school. Extracurricular activities such as athletics, band and chorus are offered at Appalachian High School along with clubs and organizations to provide students with opportunities for involvement outside the classroom setting. According to medicinelearners, the University of Alabama School of Medicine is the leading medical school in Alabama. Located in Birmingham, this school has been educating students for over 100 years. It offers a four-year MD program with a wide variety of research opportunities, as well as specialized programs such as the Rural Medical Scholars Program and the Primary Care Scholars Program. The school also has two satellite campuses in Montgomery and Huntsville. Students at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine have access to state-of-the-art facilities, including a simulation center and clinical skills laboratories. This school offers both MD and DO programs and provides students with an opportunity to gain hands-on experience by participating in clinical rotations at various medical centers throughout the state. The college also boasts a diverse student body made up of individuals from all walks of life who are committed to improving healthcare in their communities. In addition to these two medical schools, there are several other accredited medical schools located throughout Alabama such as Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM), University of South Alabama College of Nursing, University of West Alabama Medical Sciences Center, Auburn University School Of Medicine, and many more. Each one provides students with quality education that prepares them for their future careers as physicians or healthcare professionals.
