India Economy, Population, History and Maps

India has a very old and diverse origin. The DrĂ¡vida, dominant until the 2nd millennium a. C., underwent the invasion of Aryan tribes of the Northwest. In the 12th century, Muslim rule was established in much of India, replaced by the Mongol Empire between the 16th and 18th centuries. The commercial interest of Europeans increased with the arrival of Vasco da Gama in 1498 and, later, with the creation of the British East India Company, there was an increase in British influence, at the same time that Mongolian power was fragmented internally. In 1757 the territory remained in the possession of Great Britain, until 1947, the year in which it granted independence to the country. The struggle that led to independence was led by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who for 50 years struggled to help the most disadvantaged, reason that earned him the title of Mahatma (Great Soul). The two main Indian ethnic groups (the Hindus, who demanded their own government, and the Muslims, who were removed from power by the British) began to show signs of dissatisfaction. That same year, Muslims conquered a new state, Pakistan. The tension between the two ethnic groups increased, resulting in a real slaughter. In 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was murdered by a Hindu fanatic. Congress Party leader Jawaharial Nehru rose to power and became the Indian prime minister. In 1965 hostilities with Pakistan took place again.

In the 1960s there was a Green Revolution in Indian agriculture that allowed the Government to set up a grain reserve to compensate for bad agricultural years, thus preventing hunger. However, the success of the Green Revolution was affected, a few years later, by the problems of pollution and income shortages.

Nehru’s daughter, Indira Gandhi, came to power in 1966 and, for 18 years, maintained a stable government. In 1971 he faced a new war with Pakistan. East Pakistan became independent and led to the formation of a new nation, Bangladesh. The next crisis involved Sikhs (a religious minority) who sought to make Penjabe an independent nation, which resulted in ethnic and religious conflicts in various parts of the country. In 1984, Indira Gandhi was murdered by two officersSikhs from your personal guard. His son, Rajiv Gandhi, was named his successor and, in 1991, he was also murdered.

India is a federal republic made up of 50 states and 7 united territories. The 1950 Constitution is based on the British model of parliamentary government. Currently, the country is experiencing a multiparty political regime with a Parliament, in which the Prime Minister governs with a Council of States and a Chamber of the People.

A natural catastrophe shook the country on December 26, 2004. On that day, there was the biggest earthquake in recent times (8.9 degrees on the Richter scale) with an epicenter off the Indonesian island of Samatra. This earthquake originated tsunamis that hit the coast of several Southeast Asian countries, such as Sri Lanka, the most affected, followed by Indonesia itself, thirdly India and then Thailand, Malaysia, Maldives and Bangladesh, causing thousands of dead and displaced persons.
