Greenland is a Danish North Atlantic island. It has an area of 2,175,600 km 2 (2004) and is located between the Arctic Ocean to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the south, the Greenland Sea to the east, and Baffin Bay to the west. Together with the adjacent islands, it forms an autonomous territory since 1979, with a population of 56,600 residents (2004). The island is covered with ice with a thickness that reaches up to 2000 m, which gives rise to the release of icebergs. In the eastern part, there is no formation of icebergs due to the existence of high altitude mountains. The climate is polar.
