The oldest peoples on the island are Tamils and Sinhalese. The descendants of these two peoples still fight each other today. Sri Lankans make up 83% of the country's inhabitants, Tamils represent 9% and Sri Lankan Moors 8%. The main religions are Buddhism (69%), Hinduism (16%), Islam (8%) and Christianity (8%). Tamil (or Tamil) and Sinhalese are the national languages - although Sinhalese is the official language and English is also a widely spoken language.

Art and culture
Buddhists say that Buddha left his footprint on top of the peak of Adam, a mountain located in the highlands of the Center-South that rises to 2243 meters in altitude; Hindus claim that the footprint was left by the god Xiva and Muslims attribute it to Adam, for this reason, the place is a meeting place for pilgrims of all these religions. There are temples and Buddhist statues and monks in saffron robes all over the island.

History
In the 11th century, Tamils, Hindus from South India, drove Buddhist Sinhaleses south, forcing them to erect a new kingdom in the mountainous interior regions and around the city of Kandy. Arab merchants arrived in Sri Lanka in search of spices. Portuguese colonizers arrived on the island in 1505. In 1796 the British took over the island, with the exception of the Sinhalese kingdom. The British developed coffee plantations in the mountains, but by 1870, harvests were wiped out by disease and coffee was replaced by Ceylon tea, which currently accounts for a large share of exports.

The conflicts ensued after the country became independent from Great Britain in 1948. So far the Tamils, although constituting a minority, have occupied a large part of the administrative posts, but since 1972 the Sinhalese majority has been occupying these same posts. posts. Both peoples have a high literacy rate, the highest of all Asian countries, with the exception of Japan. The movement against discrimination against the Tamil people started with a non-violent campaign, but degenerated into a fierce guerrilla struggle. The governments of the Indian Union, meanwhile, reached a pacification agreement with the Tamil zone in 1986. This agreement would fail, with terrorist acts and constant bomb attacks.

A natural catastrophe shook the country on December 26, 2004. On that day, there was the biggest earthquake in recent times (8.9 degrees on the Richter scale) with an epicenter off the Indonesian island of Samatra. This earthquake caused tsunamis that hit the coast of several Southeast Asian countries, including Sri Lanka (the most affected), followed by Indonesia, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Maldives and Bangladesh, causing thousands of deaths and displaced people.
