History
In 1397 Denmark joined Norway and Sweden for royal
weddings. But, from 1448 onwards, periods of disunity
and wars began to exist between the Danish and Swedish
monarchies. In 1523 the union was broken. During the
16th century, the establishment of Lutheranism led
Denmark to a civil war. Throughout the seventeenth
century, the country was involved in a series of wars
with the aim of claiming its hegemony above the
Baltic. The wars resulted in the signing of the
Copenhagen Peace in 1660, which definitively established
the borders of Norway, Sweden and Denmark. In the
eighteenth century Denmark expanded colonial trade, but
the Napoleonic wars of the early nineteenth century
emptied the treasure again. In 1814 Denmark had to give
Norway to Sweden. In 1864 he lost Schleswig-Holstein to
Prussia.
Between 1849 and 1915, the country had three
constitutions and regained Schleswig-Holstein through
the 1920 plebiscite. But, between 1940 and 1945, it was
occupied by the Nazi army. In 1945 Denmark recognized
Iceland's independence and, in 1948, granted autonomy to
the Faroe Islands, which had been under Danish
administration since 1380. Greenland was officially
incorporated into Denmark in 1953 and, in 1979, it
became autonomous. For Denmark democracy and rights, please check intershippingrates.Denmark was one of the founding
states of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
in 1949, and became a member of the European Union (EU)
in 1973. It is one of the countries that has not yet
joined the single currency. Two referendums were held,
one in 1992 and the other in 2000, and in both there was
a refusal to join the euro. |
