Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail
The Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail runs through the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. The historical route from 1780 follows the march of the pioneers who crossed the Appalachian Mountains and thus initiated the western expansion of the USA. The trail has a length of approx. 530 km and is therefore one of the long-distance hiking trails. However, the entire trail has not yet been completed as a long-distance hiking trail. The Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail has been part of the National Trails System since 1980.

Fort Raleigh National Historic Site
The Fort Raleigh National Historic Site is located in northeastern Carolina near Manteo. The Fort Raleigh National Historic Site protects nothing less than the place where Roanoke was located. Roanoke was located on Roanoke Island, off the east coast of North Carolina and was founded on August 17, 1585 with 108 men, making it the first English colony in North America. However, it had to be abandoned the following year and has since been considered a lost colony. The Fort Raleigh National Historic Site covers an area of approximately 2.8 km² and is visited by approximately 250,000 people annually. The Fort Raleigh National Historic Site was established in 1941. The performance of “The Lost Colony” has taken place here annually since 1937.

Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site
The Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site is located in northwestern North Carolina in the small town of Flat Rock. The historic Connemare Farm, where Pulitzer Prize winner Carl Sandburg lived from 1945 to 1969, is preserved here. But this farm has a history that goes back to its construction in 1838. The property covers an area of approximately 120,000 m² and now attracts almost 30,000 visitors annually. In addition to a museum and the corresponding historic houses and barns, there are also about 8 km of hiking trails.

Fort Fisher State Recreation Area
The former Fort Fisher was a fortified military facility of the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. The facility served to protect the entrance to the city of Wilmington, so that the supply routes were secured. In 1865 the northern states conquered the plant. Today, the Fort Fisher State Recreation Area includes those from the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher and the Fort Fisher State Historic Site. The memorial also has the status of a National Historic Landmark and covers approximately 0.81 km².

Tryon Palace in New Bern The
Tryon Palace in the city of New Bern is a reconstruction of the historic governor’s palace in the city. The Tryon Palace was built in the 1770s and served as a residence for the British colonial governor. The Tryon Palace fell victim to a fire in the 1790s and was only reconstructed in the 1950s. In addition to the colonial building, the surrounding 65,000 m² gardens are also highly recommended. Since 2010, the North Carolina History Center has also been located here with an exhibition area of approximately 5,600 m².

Shipwreck – Queen Anne`s Revenge
In 1996 the wreck of the pirate ship “Queen Anne`s Revenge” was found off the coast near Beaufort in the north of the state and intensively examined. It was the ship of the then infamous British pirate Edward Teach (1680-1718). Edward Teach, better known by his pirate name Blackbeard, boarded merchant ships in the Caribbean and off the east coast of the United States and brought them under his control. He used bullets filled with lead shot, nails and even glass. These projectiles caused serious injuries to the crews, but little damage to the ships, which he could therefore take over almost intact. North Carolina State Capitol in Raleigh
The North Carolina State Capitol in the capital Raleigh is the seat of the government of North Carolina. The construction of the North Carolina State Capitol lasted from 1833 to 1840. The building is in the style of the Greek Revival. In 1970 the building was added to the list of Historic Places and in 1973 declared a National Historic Landmark.

Bank of America Corporate Center in Charlotte
The Bank of America Corporate Center is a high-rise building in the city of Charlotte. With its 60 floors, the skyscraper has a total height of 265 m and is the tallest building in the state. It was completed in 1992 and since then the Bank of America Corporate Center has also been the tallest building between Philadelphia and Atlanta.

Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord
The Charlotte Motor Speedway is a 1.5 mile (2.414 km) race track in the city of Concord, just north of Charlotte. The racetrack has the shape of a quad oval, which is very popular in NASCAR races. During a race, the facility can accommodate up to 165,000 visitors. The track was built from 1959 to 1960 and in 1992 the first night races of the NASCAR series took place here. The route is nicknamed “The Beast of the Southeast”. This is because in curve 4, before the start and finish straight, drivers often come into contact with the outer wall and thus damage their racing cars. Ironically, two eyes are painted on there. They symbolically look for potential victims.

US National Whitewater Center in Charlotte The
US National Whitewater Center is a training facility for canoeists and kayakers, but climbers and mountain bike riders also get their money’s worth here. The center is located in Charlotte and was opened in 2006. The world’s largest artificial circulating white water facility is located in the US National Whitewater Center. The entire complex covers an area of approx. 1.6 km² and anyone in Charlotte looking for some sporting activity should consider a visit.

Biltmore Estate at Asheville
The Biltmore Estate is a historic Renaissance style mansion near the city of Asheville. The Biltmore Estate was built from 1888 to 1895 according to the plans of Richard Morris Hunt on behalf of George Washington Vanderbilt II. In reference to a European castle, the building is built in the Châteauesque style and whoever visits it could really think that he is in France. At the time of completion, the Biltmore Estate was the largest private property in the United States with an area of approximately 16,000 m². But even today the size of this property is impressive. The Biltmore Estate has 250 rooms, a bowling alley, a fitness room and the mandatory swimming pool. After completion, it was one of the first houses to be completely equipped with electrical connections and electric light bulbs. The Biltmore Estate has been a National Historic Landmark since 1964 and is now a museum. The Biltmore Estate has often served as a film set. Parts of the films Hannibal, Richie Rich, Forrest Gump and The Last Mohawk were filmed here.
